Chapter 2: Sadness
Three years later … Nayland, England
On a blustery winter day in February, Richard jogged over to Elizabeth’s house. He saw her outside in the garden with no shoes. She pushed a large, almost too large rake around in the dirt. Little puffs of breath billowed around her mouth, with her hair uncovered and in a tangled mess down her back. Something was definitely wrong. Judith would never have allowed her to be outside without a head covering.
As he got nearer to Elizabeth, he saw her tear-stained face.
“Elizabeth, I got here as fast as I could; whatever is wrong?”
“Oh Richard, I am happy you are here. Father and Mother’s gossip told me to get out. I cannot help her, and they say I am bothering her. I’m not.”
“I know you are not, but you have to be older and bigger to help. Please come home with me?”
She looked up at him. Her eyes welled with tears; she shoved her hands to her eyes to push the tears away. She nodded yes instead.
“I’ll be right back. I saw your father in front of the house and I will tell him we are going to my house. Wait here. And stop raking. You are getting…
