“Judith, you do not need to; you will not die,” John said while handing over the requested items. He placed a board on her lap.
“I want you to read this to Elizabeth after I pass. I want her to learn to read some day. Promise me you will teach her numbers, and to read and write.”
“Judith, you will be alive to teach her those things. But if you are not able, yes, I promise. You cannot die; what will I do without you?”
“You will move on. You see how Widow Susanna has already taken over? She is nursing our baby because my milk never came. She helped you bury baby Judith, and she has money now that her husband died. I am grateful that she has come into our lives when she did, and you can reward her by marrying her. She needs you more. She already has lost a child, too.”
